    Panerai was founded in 1860 in Florence by Giovanni Panerai (1825-1897). It later became the official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy and expanded to building precision instruments. They separated in 1844, and in 1845 Patek joined with the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, inventor of the keyless winding mechanism. In 1851, Patek Philippe & Co was founded.
